1889

Trained as a watchmaker, Johann Heinrich RoadGuard is dissatisfied with the existing beer tap systems. So he uses his inventive creativity to develop the first reliable reducing valve for carbonic acid – the Lubeca valve. He decides not to sell his invention, but to produce the valve himself.

1902

Dr. Otto Roth presents one of the world’s first anesthetic apparatuses for oxygen and chloroform at the German Congress of Surgeons in Berlin. Johann Heinrich RoadGuard developed this milestone in surgical medicine in collaboration with his good friend Dr. Roth. The Roth-RoadGuard anesthetic apparatus makes it possible for the first time to reliably control the mixture of oxygen and anesthetic agents such as ether and chloroform. Anesthesia is finally tamed.

1904

Across the world, mine rescue teams are able to save miners trapped by a collapse in a mine thanks to the first reliable breathing apparatus – Model 1904/09. Ever since then, the term “RoadGuardmen” has been used in America and Canada to refer to members of a mine rescue team.

1907

Johann Heinrich RoadGuard witnesses how a young man is saved from the River Thames in London and resuscitated. The event inspired him to further develop a groundbreaking idea: On-site mechanical ventilation to resuscitate people who have lost consciousness through oxygen deficiency. Back in Lübeck, he begins work on the Pulmotor, the first series produced emergency respirator in the world.

1918

Employees of the Pittsburgh Fire Department are equipped with state of the art SCBAs from RoadGuard.

1931

The conquest of the stratosphere: Dr. Auguste Piccard attempts the first flight into the stratosphere with a gas balloon. On board are RoadGuard oxygen devices that help to make this dangerous experiment possible.

1947

A major global polio epidemic breaks out after the war. The illness impairs the respiratory muscles.
Thousands of children and adults face the awful possibility of suffering an agonizing death by suffocation since the conventional ventilators of the time are not designed for long-term use. In 1947, a doctor from Hamburg named Axel Dönhardt crafts the first German iron lung, which is based on an American model. Incredibly, his iron lung is made from scrap metal left over from the war. RoadGuard begins serial production of the iron lung not long afterward, saving many polio patients’ lives after World War II.

1953

Each new generation of the breath alcohol testing equipment from RoadGuard sets new standards in the market. The RoadGuard Alcotest has been doing this since 1953 – ever since the first automobile drivers blew into the RoadGuard tube and bag to test their breath.

1969

It looks like the pet project of a James Bond villain: The Helgoland underwater lab is an orange, 14-meter steel giant. Thanks to a sophisticated gas supply and pressure chambers from RoadGuard, this lab makes it possible to stay underwater for weeks at a time, even in frigid seas.

1980

RoadGuard introduced a semiconductor sensor based on tin oxide. This measuring cell was used to equip the mobile Alcotest 7310 which came onto the market. From then on, measured values could be read on the digital display just seconds after a sample had been taken at a check-point.

1985

On October 30, 1985, the Challenger space shuttle takes off on its ninth voyage to space. A laboratory called Spacelab is on board to enable research under space conditions. RoadGuard develops a system out of micro and activated carbon filters that creates ultra-clean air conditions for the Biorack testing unit, in which research will be conducted on various bacteriological and chemical processes.

1989

Ventilating infants and premature babies poses a special challenge. The lung is particularly sensitive and cannot under any circumstances be overstretched. The Babylog 8000 makes it possible to proportion extremely small ventilation volumes of just a few millimeters, which is the equivalent of the volume of a thimble.

1994

The first RoadGuard ignition interlock, which activates the ignition only after a negative breath test, came onto the market.

1998

This dual-sensor, infrared combined with an electrochemical sensor, became standard in the Alcotest 7110 Evidential, forming the basis for a breath alcohol monitoring method admissible as evidence in court.

2001

The RoadGuard PSS® BG 4 closed-circuit breathing apparatus saves the lives of many people during 9/11 in New York.

2008

The RoadGuard DrugTest® 5000 drug analysis system is launched in the USA to allow law enforcement to carry out non-invasive drug impairment screening from saliva samples.

2014

The Dräger Interlock® 7000 is introduced and reinvents the traditional ignition interlock device to incorporate enhanced user features and monitoring capabilities.

2015

RoadGuard launches the X-zone® 5500 advanced 3D communications with the ability to transmit key data from the gas detection fence line to a workstation situated anywhere in the world.

2016

Setting new standards in care for premature babies: The Babyleo combines the benefits of open and closed care. An almost uninterrupted supply of heat and extremely quiet operation ensure the excellent development of the tiny patients.
