Ignition Interlock Program in Michigan
In Michigan, an individual convicted, or an alcohol-related driving offense may be required to install an ignition interlock device in his or her vehicle. If you have two or more DUI convictions within seven years (or three or more convictions within 10 years), you’re considered a “Habitual Offender” under Michigan law.
The Michigan Secretary of State is required to revoke the driver’s license of a Habitual Offender and deny his or her application for another license for a certain period of time.
The following suspension periods apply to first time offenses:
After the revocation and denial period, Habitual Offenders are permitted to apply for a driver’s license appeal hearing.
If a restricted license is approved, the Habitual Offender must use an ignition interlock device (IID) when driving. This individual won’t be allowed to drive until the IID has been securely installed and proof of installation has been shown.
- The ignition interlock device must be in place for at least one year
- IIDs require monthly monitoring
