A night out with friends should be fun, stress-free, and most importantly entertaining! But, let’s face it if there is alcohol involved you could be put at risk for drinking too much or worse, drunk driving. You may know your limit, but expectations from friends or the pressure to “have fun” may cause you to lose control. During a night out the last thing that should be on your mind, is the consequences of a DUI arrest.

You make be asking yourself, how do prevent me and my friends from drunk driving? Well, the answer is easier than you think, it all starts with being responsible prior to taking that first drink. If you’re going to a bar, a friend’s house, or a work event, the best solution is to not drive there at all. Call a cab, car service, or a friend for a ride to avoid any temptation to drive later on by not even having a car there.

If not having a car there seems impossible, then have someone who doesn’t drink drive you (yes, they’re out there). Another option is to hand your keys to someone you can trust, immediately upon arrival with strict instructions not to return them for at least 24 hours.

Steering clear of trouble doesn’t have to mean giving up all of your friends and traditions, but it does mean that you must make better choices before you take that first drink, and recognize that you may not make the best decisions after you have already had a few. Your efforts to drink responsibly may even take you and your friends down new roads, to whole new traditions that you can all enjoy safely for years to come.

You may want to give some serious thought to obtaining a personal breathalyzer, which may help you determine your blood alcohol concentration level.
